Håck ma’s Castle is an open castle for all kinds of nerds. We want to use the castle as an inclusive space, a low-barrier entry point for sharing knowledge and exchanging experiences. Håcken stands for a creative approach to technology—whether it’s computers, sewing machines, society, or stovetops (food is important!).

What constitutes inappropriate behaviour?

Emergency

In the event of a fire, leave the castle and go to the Billa car park. Fire extinguishers are located in the corridors and on every floor near the staircases.

In the event of a storm, leave the tent and go inside the castle. Emergency dormitories are available.

Information on (night-time) pharmacies, available doctors and the nearest hospital is available at the information point. A first-aid kit is located on the ground floor in the gallery corridor between the toilets and the kitchen!

Hygiene

Showers

For daily personal hygiene, there are 5 showers in the castle and 2 eco-showers in front of the dormitory wing.

Toilets

The castle has numerous unisex toilets. In the middle of the gallery corridor (ground floor, south wing), there is also a ‘men’s’ and a ‘ladies’ toilet. There are accessible toilets in the inner courtyard.

Outside, opposite the chill-out area, there are eco-toilets and washbasins.

Food and Drink

Drinks are available at our bar in the inner courtyard; in bad weather, the bar moves indoors. During the night, non-alcoholic drinks will be available at the dining table. The ticket price includes a 24/7 breakfast at the dining table and one hot, vegan meal per day.

How can you take part?

You can submit and view your ideas for workshops, talks, DJ sets and more at openki.hack-mas.at. Once a day, we’ll meet in the main hall (Lise Meitner), decide together which sessions should take place that day, and allocate rooms according to requirements. Help out

Do you keep spotting ghosts everywhere? Fancy helping out too? Bar? Logistics? Night watch? We’re not using the ‘angel’ system familiar from other Chaos events. You can sign up for shifts on a noticeboard at the information point.

Wi-Fi

Håck ma’s Castle offers the following Wi-Fi networks on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz:

We recommend using the “Hack ma’s” network. It requires a username and password. You can use hackmas/hackmas or any other combination of username and password. Here you can find the certificate.

The “Hack ma’s open” network supports Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE), which offers a level of security comparable to a Wi-Fi network with a shared password, but does not protect against spoofing.

FAQs: Blindness and Deafness

When can I approach blind people?

Any time! Blind people often seem busy because they can’t see you and don’t realise you’re ready to interact and chat. So go ahead, approach them and ask them about their interests and projects. After all, like most people, they’re here to meet lovely people.

How do I communicate with deaf people?

If you want to say something but don’t know Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS): Write it down on a piece of paper or use the notes app on your mobile, and use your facial expressions and gestures!

Pro tip: Ask them about their interests and projects, and avoid questions about deafness and ÖGS.
