Be excellent to each other!
Thanks to Chaos West for writing the code
Why this Code of Conduct?
- We want the event to be a comfortable place without discrimination and harassment. People who may have had bad experiences at events should see that we take discrimination and harassment seriously and will not tolerate it.
- When people experience discrimination and harassment, they should know who to talk to and have the confidence to do so because they know they will be taken seriously.
- At this event discrimination and harassment does not occur in any particular abundance. But as part of society as a whole, we have learned and developed behaviors that are contrary to respectful coexistence. We want to sensitize attendees for behaviors that violate boundaries but they may not have previously classified as such.
Long version
The Chaos Computer Club “according to its statutes and its members’ intentions, is a galactic community for all life forms. Consequently, we want to offer all participants at our events a safe and enjoyable experience, regardless of age, gender and sexual identity, physical or psychological circumstances, ethnic, regional and/or religious affiliation or origin, external appearance or socio-economic status,” as stated in the Principles.
Even if this goal cannot be achieved in its entirety due to social power relations, we want to work towards it. Therefore, for Håck ma’s Castle we formulate more explicitly what is not desired here.
Unwanted behavior
We at Håck ma’s Castle understand harassment to include:
- Discriminatory statements, for example, regarding gender and sexual identity, disability, physical appearance, age, ethnic, regional and/or religious affiliation or origin, or socioeconomic status.
- Discriminatory behavior, such as repeatedly speaking to deaf people in spoken language instead of sign language or other more suitable methods (e.g. text-based).
- Unsolicited recording or portraiture (image, video, audio) of others (for me details, check our photo policy).
- Unwanted physical contact
- Unwanted sexualized attention (compliments, innuendos, looks, gestures, statements, actions)
- Sexualized depictions
- Intimidation, stalking or threats of violence
- Unsolicited and unwelcome explanations or comments on the actions of others
- Intentionally using incorrect pronouns (misgendering) or identity labels or using discarded names (deadnaming)
- Initiating relationships or sexual contact by taking advantage of hardship or structural inequalities (age, social position, etc.)
- Intrusive provision of addictive substances (e.g. alcohol) or medication
- Advocating for or encouraging any of the above behaviors
Harassment does not include:
- References to discriminatory, harassing, or assaultive behavior.
- Stating and setting boundaries (e.g., “Leave me alone” or “I don’t want to discuss this with you”).
- Actions that are done with the explicit consent of all parties involved.
This consent or agreement principle is based on the idea that only YES means YES. If you do not have a yes for an action, it is to be refrained from. Statements that are not an explicit yes are to be understood as a no.
Scope
This Code of Conduct applies to the Håck ma’s Castle event, but is not strictly limited to actions and statements made at the event.
We believe that people should strive to be free of discrimination and harassment at all times and in all places.
Children and underage teens are as important a part of our community as any other participants. They are welcome at Håck ma’s Castle and enjoy our special support and specific protection. This includes - not only, but also - the legal rules of Protection of Young Persons Act (“Kinder- und Jugendschutzes”).
Enforcement
People at the Håck ma’s Castle who are asked to refrain from harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
In the event of harassing behavior, the Håck ma’s Castle project leads reserve the right to take necessary action to make Håck ma’s Castle a pleasant environment for all participants. Possible measures range from word of warnings to permanent exclusion from the Håck ma’s Castle. If there is any ambiguity as to what a phrase means, it should be interpreted in the spirit of the overall document.
